REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (WHNT) – You might have seen a large plume of smoke coming from Redstone Arsenal on Friday, just after 1 p.m.

Marshall Space Flight Center used explosives to demolish a concrete test stand in the west test area.  The demolition went off as planned.

Test stand 4696 has been inactive since 1969.  It was officially known as the F1 Engine Static Test Stand, and was built to test engines that would eventually help power the Saturn V and take man to the moon.

Marshall Space Flight Center is removing the stand to eliminate maintenance costs and provide space for modern test facilities.
