Muscle Shoals Airport Announces Major Renovations To Terminal

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (WHNT) – Build it and they will come, or in this case, renovate it and flyers will come.

That’s the hope of Northwest Alabama Regional Airport’s announcement of a million dollar plan to renovate and update their facilities.

For more than six months, airport administrators have been putting together plan to give Northwest Alabama Regional Airport a major updating.

The project is an effort to draw more people to the airport to use the airport’s new air carrier.

“We anticipate seeing larger passenger traffic and so we are preparing ourselves for that,” said airport director Barry Griffith.

According to Griffith, the terminal was last updated 25 years ago, and the building is showing its age.  Exposed drywall, wallpaper peeling from the walls and a leaking roof has put this renovation on the fast track.

“It gives us an opportunity to put a new look, a fresh face on the airport and hopefully remind people we have an airport here in northwest Alabama so that when they look to book their flights they will think of us first,” said Griffith.

The rehabilitation of the terminal building, both on the inside and out, is expected to take 15 months to complete.

Griffith says 95 percent of the money being used for the renovation is coming through federal and state grants.

Airport officials say passengers flying Silver Airways will be able to book their flights on Delta Airlines website starting December first.

Right now Silver Airways offers two non-stop flights to and from Atlanta’s international airport each day.
