Six Arrested After Increased Patrols at Fabius Coal Mines
FLAT ROCK, Ala. (WHNT) – Jackson County deputies arrested six young adults over the weekend as a result of increased patrols near Flat Rock.
Chief Deputy Rocky Harnen said the narcotics unit found the group hiding at the Fabius coal mines, which appears to be a new hangout place for people to drink and do drugs.
“It’s a place that’s out in the middle of nowhere and it’s a place people will go to do illegal things, and our narcotics guys just happened to be up there this weekend and found six of them doing things they shouldn’t have been doing,” Harnen said.
Deputies got complaints in October about possible meth activity at the area.
Later in the month, they found the body of a missing man at the end of a five day search.
“I certainly realized there were a lot more places to hide back there than I ever dreamed of, and we didn’t cover all of it,” Harnen said.
He said deputies noticed beer cans and other suspicious evidence, and increased their patrols which led to the arrests over the weekend.
Jonathan Ryan Holland, 26, and Nathaniel Lebron Chapman, 23, face charges for possession of marijuana, as well as public intoxication. Holland is also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and promoting prison contraband.
Zachary Blake Chapman, 21, Mikala Beth Bowen, 22, and Laticia Marie Boyd, 18, are each charged with illegal possession of alcoholic beverages. Boyd and another 18-year-olds, Halley Nichelle Taylor, are charged with underage consumption of alcohol.
Investigators say there is no evidence connecting the six people arrested with Michael Harden, Jr., who was reported last seen there October 25 and found dead October 30.
Chief Deputy Harnen said the narcotics unit is keeping an eye out for patterns of what criminals are doing.
“We try to catch up with them, they try to stay a step ahead of us but we’re right there behind them and if they slow down, we’ll catch them,” Harnen said.
