HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Maria Lacayo had spent the last six years of her life on the dirt floor of her home unable to walk and facing a very hard life ahead, until one determined woman from Tennessee made it her mission to save Maria’s life.
Jean Washam with Jesus Centered Miniseries in Knoxville, Tennessee was in Nicaragua on a mission trip last year when she happened to come across Maria.
“She was on her knees on the floor, I knew at that moment she was the reason God had brought me down there,” Washam told WHNT News 19 Tuesday.
Maria’s family gave permission for Washam to bring Maria back to the United States to start receiving medical treatment immediately. A side effect to the Neurofibromatosis is very weak bones. Her leg snapped six years ago and with no money for surgery, Maria was left to get around on her knees.
The mission workers gathered enough money and resources to pay for some of the surgery and get Maria the medication she needs to survive. The drugs she takes cost over $3,000 a month to cover the costs.
Through friends of friends the owners of Fourroux Prosthetic in Huntsville hears about Maria’s tragic situation and said they wanted to help.
Maria was brought their facility, fitted with a new prosthetic leg and now Maria can walk on her own.
“We help amazing people everyday, but sometimes you get patients like Maria that have that extra special something, we are all benefiting from here,” Keith Watson said.
Fourroux Prosthetic covered the cost of the leg and therapy to allow Maria to walk on her own.
“She does have a long road ahead of her, at least she can walk with her head held high to continue fighting,” Washam added.
