Turn Your Black Friday Shopping Experience Green With Money-Saving Tricks

Black_Friday400

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – In WHNT NEWS 19’s weekly segment, Money Saving Monday, we’re targeting “the” shopping day of the year:  Black Friday,  November 23rd.

Shoppers can turn the day into Green Friday, whether purchasing a large or small item, by doing a little homework, planning, and then smart execution.

Whether you’re on a “deal buster” trip or a “three-dollar pajama trip,” you can come home with great deals and a handful of leftover cash.

First: do your homework.  Research what you’re looking for and check deals already out there.

There are websites, such as bfads.net and gottadeal.com, that consolidate all of the Black Friday flyers already leaked out by merchants.  They also do price comparisons and offer buyer guides.

For big-ticket items, beware of too-good-to-be-true deals, such as a huge flatscreen TV for $100.  These deals may exist, but it’s likely the store will have only one or two of them in stock.

Also check past prices.  Some merchants jack up prices right before Black Friday, so they can claim big sales, which actually bring prices back down to normal.

For small-ticket items, like DVDs, CDs, and clothing, remember most deals are only deals if you buy small quantities of things you’ll actually use.

Keep in mind, a Black Friday deal is helping you spend, not save and you’re especially vulnerable if you’re an impulse shopper.  In that case, you might be better to shop online, take advantage of the free shipping codes and limit temptation.

For planning, it’s simple:  make a list of what you need and what you’re willing to pay and stick to it.  You should be ready to walk out of a store it the price there is higher than what you want.

For the execution of your money-saving approach:  Call the merchants ahead of time and get familiar with their Black Friday policies, such as handing out tickets for big items.

And ask yourself — is it worth it?  Some people calculate how much money they make an hour and determine if the item they want is worth their time to stand in line.

If you have a smart phone, try the app “Black Flyday 3.0“.  It tracks and notifies you of  killer “door-buster” and daily deals.

And here’s the scoop with free money, free stuff with purchases, and free stuff after rebates:
