ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) - Many of you are preparing that traditional Thanksgiving meal of turkey and dressing. but imagine cooking for 400 people. all of them strangers! For the second year in a row, that's the mission of an Athens woman. She wants everyone to have a good dinner on Thanksgiving, and we do mean everybody.
When Roxanne Haggermaker shops for her Thanksgiving dinner, ya better bring a truck. She plans on feeding at least 400 people, and probably more. Roxanne and a friend got the idea last year to host a free Thanksgiving dinner for anyone and everyone who wanted to attend. The word got out and some 200 people showed up to eat. Whats more, they delivered another 200 meals to people who couldn't get out to join them, and that's exactly what they plan to do again this year.
"I get happiness out of it. I mean, that's just it," Haggermaker said. "Me and my kids and my family, we work hard on this. We decided we could have Thanksgiving any day and we really do, we have a meal on the table everyday, but you know people who don't, that's what its all about, just making sure everybody does," she said.
A lot of people donate time, food and money to the effort, but Roxanne fills in the difference, to the tune of about 600 dollars. It's not that she has a lot, she's just thankful for what she has. It sounds like someone has this whole Thanksgiving thing all figured out.
By the way, the dinner will take place at the Vietnam Veterans of America building on West Elm Street in Athens. Thanksgiving dinner is set for Thursday from 11:00 A.M. until 3:00 P.M. If you live in Limestone County, and you can't get out and need a meal delivered to you, just call 256-374-2073. One of Roxanne's volunteers will deliver your meal at no charge.
