HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Hundreds of volunteers wrapped around the gym and snaked down the halls of the Downtown Rescue Mission Sunday night.
The 300 community volunteers formed an assembly line to pack 900 Thanksgiving food boxes for families in need. Nearly $17,000 worth of boxed and canned goods, including more than 1,000 turkeys were donated to the Rescue Mission.
The 900 boxes of food will be distributed to families. On Wednesday and Thursday, the mission will host Thanksgiving dinner, where they expect to serve anywhere from 1,200 to 1,500 people.
“For us to be able to meet just a little bit of that need and make their Thanksgiving a little happier is truly a blessing to us at the mission,” said Kevin Marsh, Director of Operations at the Downtown Rescue Mission.
Marsh says thanks to awareness and donations, this year they were able to serve 50 more families than in 2011.
