HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – More than 18,000 workers are out of a job as Hostess Brands starts to shut down operations. Thirty-three bakeries and 565 distribution centers will be closed nationwide.
Hostess CEO has said the company doesn’t have the financial means to continue to weather the baker’s union protests.
A subsidiary of Hostess, Merita Breads, shut down their main bakery in Birmingham on Friday morning. Outlet stores and other facilities across the state are all expected to close, though no timeline has been released.
Only a few months after Hostess Brands Inc. filed bankruptcy in January, one of two Huntsville branches of Merita Bread was shuttered, and consolidated with an outlet on Memorial Parkway.
WHNT News 19 contacted the Merita Bread Outlet, but nobody was at liberty to speak about the closures. The branch manager did not return our calls.
A total of around 172 Hostess Brand, Inc. employees across the state are expected to be impacted by the company’s closure.
