Valleywx.com: Some Sleet or ‘Soft Hail’ Reported In Several Spots
(WHNT) – We have been getting some reports of “hail” from several viewers over the past 30 minutes or so. WHNT News 19’s Robert Reeves reported pea size hail in Limestone County about 12 p.m.
This is not “hail” produced by thunderstorms with strong updrafts and is not as hard as hail from thunderstorms so therefore will not do any damage to anything. The “soft hail” is due to the low freezing level and cold air mass in place. There have also been some reports of sleet as well.
Showers are continuing to track southeast across the Tennessee Valley and are now just crossing I-65. As showers move across the area, some more sleet or even “soft hail” may mix in with the cold rain, but there is nothing to be concerned about if you experience any sleet or “soft hail”. Below is the latest radar, showing patchy showers, that are mostly light to moderate, but the ice is enhancing the radar returns slightly, making it look seem like there is heavier precipitation falling.
More showers are possible this afternoon and will gradually taper off this evening.
