Athens City Council Passes Sales Tax Increase

ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) — The Athens City Council voted Monday night in favor of a sales tax increase with a vote of 4 to 1.

The sales tax rate will be raised by one cent, changing it from 8 percent to 9.

This will be the first time the sales tax there has been adjusted in almost 40 years.

City officials say the additional funds are needed for a host of city services and improvements.
