CEDARTOWN, Ga. — Two newspapers report a Fort Payne man was arrested in Cedartown, Georgia and charged in an incident at a Fred’s store there.
Kelly Jack Mayo, 45, is charged with felony armed robbery, felony kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of false imprisonment, according to The Cedartown Standard and The Rockmart Journal.
Mayo is charged in an incident at Fred’s in Cedartown on October 4. Police say he entered the store just before closing and tied up the cashier, who got free and called 911. Police responded and surrounded the building. Mayo allegedly took an employee hostage at gunpoint out a back door. Police were waiting there, and Mayo allegedly used the female employee as a shield and forced her into a car to drive away.
Police rammed the vehicle and surrounded it, and the hostage was released without injury. Police immediately arrested Mayo. He is being held in the Polk County Jail.
Cedartown Assistant Police Chief Jamie Newsome says Mayo is a former Fred’s employee from Alabama.
The two newspapers report Mayo is wanted for questioning by authorities in Alabama, but it’s not clear if it is for the shooting at Fred’s in Rainsville on August 24. WHNT News 19 is working to get more information from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.
There is a $7,500 reward offered for information that leads to an arrest in the Rainsville incident. Alabama Governor Robert Bentley secured $2,500 earlier this week, adding to the $5,000 an anonymous donor had already offered.
