Hunter Morris Wins Minor League Gold Glove
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Just when it seemed as if Huntsville Stars first baseman Hunter Morris had won every award possible, he proved us wrong by earning another honor today. The Huntsville native was named a 2012 Minor League Rawlings Gold Glove Award® winner as announced by Minor League BaseballTM and Rawlings Sporting Goods Company, Inc.
The all-star first baseman finished the season with a .995 fielding percentage, leading all Southern League first baseman. He committed only six errors in 1,259 chances (136 games) and never had a multi-error game. It wasn’t until his 22nd game that he made his first error of the season.
After a strong season both offensively and defensively, Morris was named a mid-season and postseason All-Star, Southern League MVP, Brewers Minor League Player of the Year, Brewers Player of the Month (April, June), TOPPS Southern League Player of the Month (June, July). He was also named Southern League Player of the Week twice (July 2-8, August 27 – September 3). Baseball America also ranked him as the best defensive player and best batting prospect in the Southern League.
Morris was drafted by the Brewers in the fourth round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Auburn University. He was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Year that same year, batting .386 with 76 RBIs and a school record 23 home runs. He was also named Huntsville City Player of the Year four times while attending Grissom High School.
All of the Rawlings Gold Glove Award® honorees were selected among qualifying players from the 10 domestic-based, full-season Minor Leagues. They will each receive their own Rawlings Gold Glove Award, modeled after the iconic award given to Major League Baseball’s top defensive players, during the 2013 season.
