HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Operation Stand Down’s annual event to help homeless veterans is this weekend.

It will be held October 19-21 at the Jaycees Building on Airport Road, near Leeman Ferry Road.

Operation Stand Down brings homeless veterans together in a single location to provide food and drink, hygiene items, haircuts, clothing, shoes and other basic necessities.  Veterans can also get free medical examinations and legal advice.  Community groups also provide counseling and resources to try to help the homeless veterans address their individual problems and rebuild their lives.  Veterans can also learn about federal, state and local services available to them.

The group needs volunteers and donations to help with the effort.  If you would like to assist, please email Dan Hamrick at drhamrick@west.com.

Operation Stand Down is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization.  It began in San Diego, California in 1988 as a grassroots effort to help homeless veterans.  It is estimated that more than 100,000 homeless veterans have received assistance at Stand Downs since the initiative began.
