UNA Celebrates Homecoming With 41-0 Win Over Shorter
Florence, Ala. - The University of North Alabama defense recorded its second shutout in its last three games and the Lions offense scored a season-high 41 points as UNA picked up a 41-0 Homecoming win over Shorter at Braly Stadium.
UNA, now 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Gulf South Conference, took a 21-0 lead in the first half and added three more scores over the final two quarters for the blow-out win.
Starting quarterback Chris Alexander completed nine-of-10 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another score. Back-up quarterback Luke Wingo completed three-of-four passes for 82 yards and rushed for 47 yards and two scores.
The Lions finished with 436 yards of total offense , rushing for 228 and passing for 208. Shorter rushed for 219 yards but completed just four of 11 passes with three interceptions, and also lost a fumble. The Hawks are now 2-3 overall and 0-1 in GSC play.
After a scoreless first quarter, UNA got on the scoreboard on a four-yard Chris Alexander run with 13:23 left in the second quarter. The score capped a 10-play, 79-yard drive. Michael Schuster’s PAT made it 7-0.
Wingo led the Lions on a 12-play, 88-yard scoring drive on his first possession of the game. A 29-yard pass to Jason Smith set up a three-yard Wingo TD run and Schuster added the PAT to make it 14-0 at 3:58 of the second quarter.
Just before the half, Alexander hit Melvin Harris with a 33-yard TD pass to make it 21-0 with 1:43 left before intermission.
The Lions continued to roll in the second half as Lamar Smith scored on a seven-yard run with 7:59 left in the third quarter to cap a seven-play, 42-yard drive. Schuster kick missed its mark but UNA led 27-0.
With 4:28 left in the third quarter, Wingo scored again on a one-yard run to end a 68-yard drive and extend UNA’s lead to 34-0.
The final score of the game came on an 80-yard TD run by freshman Diamond Simmons with 2:35 left in the game. Simmons finished the game with 123 yards on seven carries and now has 202 yards on just nine carries for the season and has touchdown runs of 79 and 80 yards.
UNA’s defensive effort was led by Dimitri Orr with 10 tackles and Tavarius Wilson with seven. The Lions also got interceptions from Caleb Massey, Delvin Ervin and Cartez Pickett.
North Alabama travels to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Oct. 6 for a non-conference game against the Javelinas.
