Can’t wait to get your hands on the iPhone 5? Turned off a bit by the high price tag?

Here are a couple of tips for making the purchase more affordable:

  • Don’t break your contract with a service provider, even if it means waiting until you’re eligible for upgrade. “If you just bought iPhone 4S a year ago,” CNET Senior Managing Editor Kent German said, “you may not be eligible, so you`ll have to check with a carrier first. If not then you might have to pay full price.”
  • To offset the costs of a new model iPhone, try selling your old device. Websites like Nextworth or Gazelle will often offer pretty good trade-in money for a well cared for smartphone.
  • If you want to hold on to an unlimited data plan, don’t order your new phone online. You may have better luck keeping the plan you have if you talk to a service representative in person.
