HAZEL GREEN, Ala. (WHNT) - Madison County Sheriff's Deputies say they were at the right place at the right time on Monday. Several deputies responded to a robbery at the Hazel Green Pharmacy on Highway 231. Deputies arrested four men.
The Hazel Green Pharmacy robbery happened around 11:30 Monday morning. Madison County Sheriff's Deputies say four men could have gotten away with the crime, but distance was not working in their favor.
"When we responded, they were coming out at the same time, so it was kind of like being in the right place and the wrong time for them," said Investigator Brent Patterson.
Deputies caught one man outside the pharmacy. Drivers on Highway 231 knew something was going on even if they didn't know what.
James Tate lives in the area.
"I jumped up to run out and see what they were doing. When I got outside, I saw the vehicle in front of the yard," said Tate.
Tate got a good look at the SUV deputies say three of the alleged thieves used in the robbery, but only got a glimpse of the men.
One deputy gave Tate an unexpected greeting.
"He jumped out and said they had robbed a pharmacy. He went that way and I went around to go back there," added Tate.
Investigators told WHNT NEWS 19 the four mask-wearing men demanded money and drugs from the pharmacy's employees and customers. Investigators recovered evidence, including a gun, a half-mile away from the pharmacy.
Sheriff's deputies say the three of the suspects were detained near two drainage pipes. Deputies say the men were found hiding inside the pipes. Deputies told WHNT NEWS 19 they had their guns drawn on the suspects.
Deputies took 34 minutes to make all arrests. Investigators have not yet released the names of the men accused in the robbery. They say the woman hit in the head was taken to the hospital and should be fine.
