Huntsville Man Dead After Plane Crash in Weiss Lake

The Cherokee County Sheriff`s Office, Cherokee County, Piedmont, and Fisher Rescue Squads, Cherokee Emergency Medical Services, Cherokee County Emergency Management Association, Alabama Marine Police, and the Alabama State Trooper Aviation Unit responded to the scene of a plane crash in Weiss Lake on Saturday, September 15.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office confirms a Huntsville man died on Saturday when the plane he was flying crashed into Weiss Lake.

The crash happened a little before 10:00 a.m. Saturday. The initial reports indicate a single engine sea plane was attempting to land in a cove, but clipped some power lines and went down in Weiss Lake.  The pilot has been identified as 66-year-old William P. Shaver of Huntsville.  The Cherokee County Rescue Squad recovered his body. Authorities say Shaver was the only one on the aircraft at the time of the crash.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
