Labor Day Sales Boost Local Spending
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT)– The National Retail Federation says trailing only Black Friday, Labor Day is historically one of the busiest shopping days of the year.
Some people look for deals on back to school gear. Others go automobile browsing. But for many, besides barbecue and a day off from work Labor day means one thing:
“Come on, it’s Labor Day, you shop for mattresses on Labor Day, right?”
That from shopper Mary Scott Hunter who brought her husband and two children along for the ride Monday as they tested beds in the “mattress hub” of Huntsville. The corner of Whitesburg Drive and Airport Road boasts 3 separate bedding stores; two right next door to one another with a third across the street. Sales managers say the sea of signage put out by the competing stores creates a veritable mattress trifecta with combined marketing the ends up increasing sales for all three locations.
“We have been busy all day long,” Said Bedzzz Express sleep expert Craig Biddle. “We’ve probably already sold about ten or twelve sets already just this morning.”
Bedzzz Express says on any given day they set a sales goal of around $3,000. On Labor Day though they up that amount to a goal of $30,000, a figure managers said they surpassed before noon Monday.
