Scottsboro Police Arrest Armed Robbery Suspect
SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (WHNT) – A Jackson County teenager is in jail, accused of armed robbery.
Officers arrested 18-year-old Brian Joseph Samples for robbery of a Dollar General store Monday night.
Lieutenant Scott Matthews said it did not take long to identify Samples as a suspect, and caught him quickly.
Scottsboro police received a call just after the 9 p.m. closing time at the store on East Willow Street.
“A person came into the store and produced a firearm and demanded money out of the register,” Matthews said.
“Of course the employees complied and he left on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.”
Based on witness descriptions and surveillance video, they identified Samples as a suspect.
Investigators said they found evidence connected to the crime at Samples’ home, which is down the street from the store.
“We are familiar with the subject, we have dealt with [him] in the past,” Matthews said.
Police can’t discuss those incidents since they happened when Samples was a juvenile, but Matthews said it was not to the same level as armed robbery.
“When you’ve got a person that goes in and not only demands money but shows a weapon, it’s scary to what level they might go with that weapon,” Matthews said.
“To get that person off the street is something that we take pride in and we’re glad we were able to do that, to try to keep the citizens of Scottsboro safe.”
Matthews said Monday’s robbery is not connected to Friday’s shooting in DeKalb County.
Investigators continue their search for that shooter.
