Local Church To Bag 20,000 Pounds Of Green Beans To Feed Hungry
MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) – Asbury United Methodist Church in Madison will undertake a huge project on Saturday morning, and you’re invited to participate.
On Saturday, August 25, church members will bag up 20,000 pounds of green beans to feed the hungry in north Alabama. The event starts at 8 a.m. and will continue until the last bean is bagged. The event was rescheduled from the prior weekend.
Food agencies can pick up green beans from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The concept is called ‘gleaning’, or collecting produce after the harvest that would be otherwise thrown out. However, the produce is still edible.
In this case, the church is getting a large shipment of green beans from a large commercial grower in Crossville, Tennessee who has extra to spare.
If you’d like to join this Saturday’s effort, Asbury United Methodist Church is located at 980 Hughes Road in Madison. It’s coordinated through the Society of St. Andrew, a non-denonimational faith-based organization.
Asbury also did a sweet potato distribution earlier this year, helping 27 local food banks and pantries.
