TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (WHNT) – A Shoals man is behind bars accused of attempting to gun down his own stepson on the streets of Tuscumbia Thursday night.

Phillip Taylor Foreman is charged with Domestic Violence – Assault, and Firing a Weapon in the City of Tuscumbia.

Officers say the step-son, 19-year-old Quinton New, was removing a cd player from his wife’s car when the argument began.

“While he was trying to remove that, the offender came out of the house; they had words and an altercation out there,” says Det. Steven Higginbotham with the Tuscumbia Police Department. “He said, according to my (witness) statements, I’ve got something for you, went back in the house and came back out with a long gun, then shot the victim.”

Neighbors of the east Fifth Street home did not want to be identified, but say this is not the first time police have been called to the house.

They watched Thursday night as the victim sat on the curb waiting on emergency responders to arrive.

According to Higginbotham “It was definitely outside and we believe at the time the victim was trying to flee the area. So, I’m not really sure what spurs you to shoot somebody while they are leaving.”

Neighbors and police say they are thankful no one else was injured in the outdoor shooting.

Shooting victim Quinton New has been treated and released from Helen Keller Hospital.

Phillip Foreman was transferred to the Colbert County Jail this afternoon and is awaiting bond.
