Community Responds To Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Call For Help

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – An update to a potential funding crisis for Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Alabama. The agency lost a large federal grant and donations had really slowed.

Good news, though – the situation has greatly improved. In the last week, $40,000 in donations have come in from the community.

WHNT News 19 spoke with a board member about this, who said this shows the community realizes what an important role the agency plays for local children.

This doesn’t solve the problem entirely. The initial shortfall was $75,000, aside from the $150,000 federal grant that didn’t come through.

The organization will host The BIG 5K, a major fundraiser on Saturday, June 30 at Bridge Street. The race begins at 7 a.m. Early registration is $20 and ends on Saturday, June 23. You can register online or download the race registration form at

and mail it — just postmark it by Saturday, June 23 to get the early registration fee. After the 23rd, registration is $25.

You can also pick up packets and register on Friday, June 29 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Fleet Feet in Jones Valley. There is also race-day packet pickup and registration on Saturday, June 30 from 6:00 to 6:40 a.m.
