On Thursday, a Lee County judge appointed attorney Susan James and her law firm to represent Auburn shooting suspect Desmonte Leonard.
James arranged Leonard's surrender to U.S. Marshals earlier this week. She spoke about the suspect's demeanor as she transported him to the Federal building in Montgomery on Tuesday evening.
"He wasn't anxious, erratic or whining, he was just telling us his side of the story," said James.
The case has drawn national attention. The defense team says that's because it is connected to Auburn football. However, attorneys won't treat it any differently.
"Everybody has opinions. He is entitled to a good defense," said James. "Everybody is. And that's what we will try to give him."
James also said she didn't want Leonard to be held at the Lee County Jail. He is back in a cell at the Montgomery County Jail. James said they would try to get the case moved out of Lee County, because they don't think Leonard can get a fair trial there.
