Garden Tips: Hydrangea Types
George Bennett of Bennett Nurseries talks about the different types of hydrangeas.
Even though many people call them French, hydrangeas actually originated in Japan.
There are lacecap hydrangeas, which have fertile, tiny flowers in the middle surrounded by larger florettes on the outside.
Mophead hydrangeas have larger, fuller, rounded cluster of blooms. They can be pink or blue, depending on the soil. Some are purple due to soil mix.
There’s also one called ‘Fuji Waterfall’ – a lacecap, but with double florets on the outside.
Hydrangeas like shade, or partial shade at least. Bennett says they bloom best if it’s a bright shade. Try some — they’ll add mega color to your yard!
