GSC Announces 2012 Spring All-Academic Team
The Gulf South Conference announced the 2012 Spring GSC All-Academic Teams along with the Academic Honor Roll, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville was represented by 32 student-athletes on the honor roll. Of the 32 honorees, six were named to the All-Academic Team.
For UAH, the GSC All-Academic laurels were headlined by a pair of two-time All-Academic members in baseball’s Cody Barrett and softball’s Whitney Gilbert. Ty Chancelor and Drew Eiland were unanimous selections to the baseball team, giving UAH the most honorees in the sport, while Mary Kelley joined Gilbert on the softball squad. Rounding out the academic team selections for the Chargers, Daniel Canellas was a unanimous selection to the men’s tennis team.
The Chargers had 30 student-athletes named to the GSC Fall Academic Honor Roll and 16 named to the winter edition, giving UAH a total of 77 upperclassmen on the honor roll thus far in the 2011-12 academic year.
The Spring All-Academic Team is selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors and Faculty Athletic Representatives in a joint vote. Nominees must meet all three of the following qualifications to appear on the ballot: 1) an overall grade point average of 3.20, or better, on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career, 2) a starter or significant contributor to the squad and 3) leadership, academic curriculum and community service. SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. Freshman are not eligible, nor is any student who has not spent a full year in residence at the sponsoring GSC member and passed 24 semester hours or 36 quarter-hours towards an identifiable degree program during the year at that GSC member. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.
Earning a place on the Honor Roll is automatic, as long as a student-athlete carries a GPA of 3.0, or better, for either the preceding academic year or their career and be a sophomore or better in academic standing. The winter list honors include those student-athletes that participate in men’s and women’s basketball.
