Carpenters for Christ Build Two Churches in DeKalb County
More than 200 builders from seven states are building two churches in northern DeKalb County.
Carpenters for Christ are volunteering their time and skills in Henagar and Ider.
New Life Ministries will soon have a new home after meeting for many months in an Ider storefront.
“We’ve been praying for a long time for the Lord to intervene,” worship leader and youth minister Ryan Watkins said.
“We’re just a little bitty country church and we just had to have faith in Him.”
The new church building will have a sanctuary to seat about 200 people, with a nursery for toddlers and other rooms for Sunday school.
“It’s going to open a lot of doors for us, not only as our church family, but also around our community and hopefully the world,” Watkins said.
Carpenters for Christ is a non-denominational organization, united as one church family.
John Coggin is one of the coordinators, and he said many of the volunteers are families, fathers working with daughters and mothers with sons.
“We encourage women to be involved, we encourage young people to be involved,” he said.
There are more than 100 additional volunteers at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Henagar.
“I couldn’t tell you the day before we started last Saturday, whether we’d have 20 people here or 120 people,” Coggin said.
“But God always provides what we need to do what he wants us to do.”
