A city in the Shoals tops a list of Great Small American Towns.

Florence is home to many historical sites and hosts several festivals throughout the year.

Tourism officials believe this ranking could help draw people and business to the area.

Residents say the hometown feel puts Florence on the map.

“It`s a small town, it has a great atmosphere,” said Nedra McCaig.

Others cite the music history that runs deep through the shoals.

“Well I`ve traveled a lot and been around a lot of small cities but I like this one because it`s small but still very populated, and it`s very music oriented,” said Jake Clemons, from Florence.

As the largest city on the list, things like the historical downtown and the campus right up the street helps set Florence apart from other cities across the country

“Things other small towns don`t have to offer, those unique aspects of Florence definitely ranked us up higher,” said Alison Stanfield with Florence/Lauderdale tourism.

Stanfield says this rankings speaks volumes to potential visitors.

“It introduces the Florence area to visitors, and potential visitors that most likely would never find our area, they would never go to our website,” said Stanfield.

“I definitely think if you want to come, then come on, it`s an awesome place,” said Clemons.

According to Stanfield, this ranking promotes Florence more than money could buy.

“Visitors will tend to look at that and think it has much more credibility than an advertisement that`s been placed in a publication,” said Stanfield. We couldn`t buy that type of advertising.”

A city that sells itself with its historical attractions, and now a nation-wide ranking.
