Dr. Roger Rinn studies how people think, feel, and react to difficult circumstances.

While the actions that landed the Memon family behind bars may seem extreme, Rinn says it stems from a typical parental response.

Rinn explains, “It is natural for a parent to side with a child against others.  Even when you know the child is wrong, you try to lessen the impact.”

But Rinn doesn’t excuse the behavior that led to the family’s arrest.

He says, “It doesn’t make the behavior that they produced O.K. or acceptable, but it does make us understand what the parent is doing, if you understand parents are by nature protective.”

Rinn adds, “I think it would be very understandable if they made mistakes.  We all make mistakes when we’re under stress.”
