Hammad Memon’s Lawyer Talks About Client’s Run

Hammad Memon will go to trial in June for the murder of Todd Brown, a Discovery Middle School student.  WHNT News 19 talked with Memon’s lawyer, Bruce Gardner, about his client’s disappearance last week.

Gardner said he has not talked with the teen in a month.  He says he didn’t know what to think when news broke about Memon leaving the area on Friday.

“I was taking everybody at their word that Mrs. Memon had gone to Atlanta with Hammad where they were shopping and planning to be back Friday night,” Gardner said.

Police in Dallas, Texas arrested Memon and his mother Safia on Friday evening. Earlier in the day, news had broke that Memon had apparently obtained a Pakistani passport and may have been trying to leave the country.

“I don’t have any details that anybody firsthand are able to tell me like a police report, anything like that, how they found them, what they had in their possession or anything like that,” Gardner said.  “It is all hearsay to me as it is to you.”

WHNT News 19 called the Pakistani embassy in Washington D.C. Monday afternoon. The embassy confirmed that Hammad Memon and his mother both applied for passports, and said both family members provided all of the necessary documents with their application. But what was actually provided and approved is still not clear, along with how Hammad Memon was able to obtain a passport with an outstanding murder charge.

Hammad Memon is being held inside a Dallas-area juvenile detention center.
The Madison County District Attorney’s office accuses Memon of trying to leave the country and Memon’s mother of helping him.

Gardner admits he’s not tried reaching out to his client.

“No and there is no way for me to. the dallas jail where he is being held is not going to let me talk to him.”

The district attorney’s office says Hammad Memon and his mother are not fighting extradition.

Gardner believes that is the right call.

“It would certainly be my advice that he do that. I would rather he be back here than in Dallas for sure,” added Gardner.
