Despite the threat of a lawsuit, the Huntsville City Council wants to keep prayer on the agenda.

The Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation suggested they might sue the city in federal court, if they continued to practice an nvocation.

The organization calls prayer in government meetings “unnecesarry, inappropriate, and divisive.”

Instead of discontinuing the practice, the council members plan to be vigiliant about following the legal guidelines for prayer.

“You can’t proselitize, you can’t advocate a particular religion or disparage ap artcilar religion. The prayer should be inclusive,” said city attorney Peter Joffrion.

The council now plans to invite leaders from a broader range of faiths, and make it clear that no one has to participate.
